Q&A with Ross Magill
This week at Play-Ex Sports we’ve enjoyed speaking with professional golfer Ross Magill to discover more about his career.
1. Where did it start and how’s it going?
I took up golf aged 13 when my friend introduced me and my brother to it. We always competed as kids growing up in everything we did. I’m happy with how it’s going so far, I went into it not putting to much pressure on myself initially and found my feet instantly.
2. What is the most enjoyable part of your career?
The most enjoyable so far is just the process and gaining experience. Travelling around to different venues each week and meeting loads of new people.
3. Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?
My brother. From pushing each other as kids playing tennis, moving that into golf growing up and eventually into turning pro he’s supported me unconditionally.
4. What is your favourite memory or achievement so far?
Teeing it up in my first event. I’ve never really had any issue with nerves when it comes to golf but I was all over the place on that first tee.
5. If you could improve one area of your performance, what would it be?
Being able to switch on and off at the right times. It’s almost impossible to stay in the zone for 4-5 hours, but I’m working on being able to switch on when needed but also switch off.
6. Do you have any superstitions or routines that you stick to before competing tournaments?
No superstitions in particular, I use the same ball marker each round which is an old arcade token. I also must have a coffee on commutes to events.
7. What do you enjoy doing outside of sport?
I spend a lot of free time with friends, just catching up, going out for food, just enjoying be-ing around them.
8. What’s the biggest challenge of being a sports professional?
Juggling time. Finding a balance between work and downtime. Sometimes I get to absorbed in the process I forget to have some time for myself.
9. What’s the best piece of advice you would give to any aspiring sports professional?
It’s never too late to give it a go, and as cliche as it sounds, believe on your own abilities.
10. How did you come across Play-Ex Sports and what do you like about the Play-Ex.com platform?
Jon introduced me to the platform and it was a case of being shown something that I didn’t know I needed before I was shown it. The platform is great in that it’s so easy to use and the team are exceptionally helpful with anything I need.
